This scheme included the installation of EnviroKerb, a 100 per cent recycled kerb designed and manufactured by Pipeline Drainage Systems Plc (PDS Plc) for Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council.

Both King Construction and PDS Plc hope that many of the other local authorities will follow the same direction as KnowsleyMetropolitan Borough Council when designing schemes and opt to install this environment friendly product. Not only is this product 100 per cent recycled, but because of its lighter weight, it keeps air and noise pollution from machinery down to a minimum.

Envirokerb will help prevent long term injuries to the operatives installing them because they are much lighter in weight than their concrete counterparts.

However, this type of project isn't new to King Construction. Eighteen months ago we were chosen by Knowsley MBC to install plastic kerbs at Sexton Way, in the Roby area of Knowsley. This area was chosen by the council as it was subjected to a lot of heavy traffic damage in the past, and it could be more sustainable to use a product with different properties than concrete. This area is still being monitored before Knowsley MBC commits to more projects in the borough.

Re-cycling plays a large part in the operation of King Construction with the majority of the excavated bulk being re-cycled before being reused in projects we are involved in. This correlates with market research that suggests around 50 per cent of local authorities do allow and use a lot of recycled material in highway related projects. Recycling is now at the forefront of government policy with the ever diminishing stock of natural resources. Local Authorities are encouraged to find ways of increasing the amount of recycling they can do each year. With this in mind King Construction have formed a partnership to allow excavated materials to be recycled.
